Draft — pending legal review. This page describes how Keniah intends to work. It is not yet a final legal document and will be updated before public launch.
Privacy notice
Last updated: Draft, October 2026
Keniah is built for children, so we treat their information with particular care. We collect as little as we can, explain why we collect it, and give parents control.
Who we are
Keniah Edtech Africa (“Keniah”, “we”) provides the Keniah website and learning platform. We intend to act as a data controller under Kenya's Data Protection Act, 2019, and to register with the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner as required.
What we collect
- From parents and guardians: your name, email address, mobile number and, optionally, your county. We also keep a record of your consent.
- For each child profile: a nickname or display name, grade, avatar, interests and any accessibility preferences you choose to set. Children do not need an email address. We don't require a school name or gender. We ask for age or date of birth only where it's needed for age-appropriate controls or the law.
- Learning activity: how a child interacts with Experiences, for example starting, finishing, retrying, saving or making a choice. This is used to suggest Experiences and to form careful parent insights.
- Technical information: basic device, browser and security logs needed to run and protect the service.
- Pilot sign-ups: the details you enter in the Join the pilot form.
How we use it
- To create and secure your account and your children's profiles.
- To deliver Experiences and simple, explainable suggestions.
- To show you insights in your Parent Space, only once a pattern has repeated across several Experiences.
- To contact you about your account or the pilot.
- To improve Keniah, using aggregated information wherever possible.
We do not sell personal data. We do not use children's data for advertising. We do not build public profiles of children, and we do not make claims about a child's intelligence, health, personality or future.
Consent and the lawful basis
A parent or guardian creates the account and gives consent for each child. You can withdraw consent at any time, and we will stop processing your child's information except where the law requires us to keep it.
Sharing
We share information only with service providers who help us run Keniah (for example hosting, email and SMS), under contracts that require them to protect it, or where the law requires it. Where data is transferred outside Kenya, we will apply the safeguards the Data Protection Act requires.
Keeping it safe and for how long
We use secure authentication, encrypted connections and access controls. We keep information only as long as needed for the purposes above, then delete or anonymise it. Specific retention periods will be confirmed in the final version of this notice.
Your rights
Under the Data Protection Act, 2019, you have the right to be informed, to access your and your child's data, to correct it, to object to processing, to request deletion and to data portability. You can also complain to the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner.
Contact
Contact details for privacy requests will be published here before launch. Until then, you can reach us through the pilot sign-up page. See also our Child safety commitments and Terms.
